Edmond [15 Aug 2006|01:29pm]

[ mood | headachy ]

When this film first opened in Manhattan, its run was so short that, by the time I read about it, it was gone. So it was with considerable delight when I discovered the film had returned, this time to Brooklyn, last week.

Edmond seemed to have everything going for it: a script by David Mamet, based on his 1982 play of the same name; starring the incomparable William H. Macy, always marvelous but especially so in Wayne Cramer's wonderful 2003 film The Cooler; and director Stuart Gordon, who did HP Lovecraft proud with his adaptations of Re-Animator and From Beyond. On the surface, this film seemed like a winner.

Therein lies the problem: Edmond is all surface.

Edmond is the same character at the end of the film as he is at the beginning -- but it's not Macy's fault. The way the story is written, we don't know if the racial epithets Edmond spews are a sudden eruption or part of his daily routine, whether he's at the tail end of a journey toward violence or whether it's a destination he's inhabited for some time. It's not a one-note performance but a one-note character, devoid of any sense of what, if anything, has been lost. Just as Gordon's direction plods from one scene to the next, Edmond is a dead man walking from the first shot to the last (where he becomes a dead man lying down). Because we are not permitted to experience his fall, but rather just follow his somnambulistic walk on the wild side, there is no tragedy. We, like Edmond, feel nothing.

Unlike Cape Fear's Max Cady, who promised, "You're gonna learn about loss," Edmond offers no such lesson. To paraphrase Dorothy Parker's famous obvservation, the film runs the gamut of emotions from A to B.

Similarly, a litany of usually fine actors are put through their paces so quickly and without distinction that often they're gone from the screen by the time we realize who they were: Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), Dule Hill (fine here in a role that's about as far from The West Wing's Charlie as he can get), Joe Mantegna (always amazing, but especially so as Dean Martin in The Rat Pack), Denise Richards (the Charlie Sheen-Denise Richards divorce), Julia Stiles (so memorable in Mamet's State and Main), Mean Suvari (the American Beauty herself), Rebecca Pidgeon (also fine State and Main -- and married to Mr. Mamet), and Debi Mazar (not used nearly enough in Entourage). Despite all this thespian firepower, the only onscreen chemistry occurs in the scene between Macy and Stiles in her character's apartment, when, for a fleeting moment, it seems as if she and Edmond might have found in each other a twisted kindred spirit. Alas, even that spark is extinguished before it can ignite anything else.

A gentleman, a few rows ahead of us, served as spokesman for the sparse audience when the film faded out and the lights came up. "That's it?" he said. Indeed.

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find West Wings sound clips without useing a p2p network because I can't use those because of my internet. If anyone could help me I'd love you forever. If file shareing isn't allowed in this comm, please pull this post and forget it ever happened.

I'd like to invite you all to check out a new/revamped community... it's called West Wing Challenge, and it's a challenge comm with a twist. Every week, a quote, lyric, or screencap will be posted, and entries can consist of either ICONS or FANFIC. All ships/characters are accepted. Check it out:

If you're interested in participating, a comment on the most recent entry would be much appreciated so the mod knows who the active members will be. It doesn't have to be an essay... a simple "I'm in!" will suffice :)

Anyway, give it a look...

x-posted everywhere. if this isn't allowed, apologies. i'll delete it. :)

Pre-West Wing RPG [17 Oct 2005|09:02pm]

[x-posted across the WW fandom and advertising sites]

Hello. I've written about 3 months ago about this, but interest has been reawakened for the RPG that takes place just BEFORE Bartlet gets elected the FIRST time (so it's 1998 in WW time). So--essentially--we're taking ourselves back to the golden Sorkin-era BEFORE Wells got his grubby li'l hands on the show and placing it in a chokehold.

Just had to.. [05 Oct 2005|06:20pm]

Shield your eyes: I come bearing three.. erm.. interesting icons containing West Wing quotes. Mind you, they were made in Paint [you know, the basic paint that comes w/ computers..], so they lack any special effects whatsoever. However, I just had to make the last one.. =)

Pity me in my dire need to produce icons.

Political scientist looking for season five episode [03 Oct 2005|09:55am]

Is anyone out there still taping the show (or were you at least taping it in season five)?

My father is a political science professor at a major university in the southeastern U.S. He would like to show the season five West Wing episode "The Supremes" in one of his classes. He thought he had a local source for it, but that source has dried up, so he's turned to his fandom-connected daughter for help. Would anyone out there happen to have a copy of this episode and be willing to dub it and send it to my dad? He would, of course, be willing to pay all associated costs, from the tape to the postage. You'd have his gratitude (and mine, by proxy), as well as the knowledge that you've contributed to the education of the next generation. :-)

West Wing RPG [20 Jul 2005|08:20pm]

Wow...I see there hasn't been an entry in this comm for 4 months now.

Anyway, I've just created a West Wing RPG here on lj, but it has a tiny twist--Know how the show started 8 months into the first administration? Well here, it begins when Bartlet is nominated for his FIRST election, so we see a LITTLE of the campaign, of elections, and his first inaguration, and through there. So we will begin in 1998 West Wing time. However, any character info revealed in ANY episdoe is fair game for canon HERE.

I am the creator and moderator (and Donna). Currently, the only characters taken are CJ and Leo. Everyone else is up for grabs! ((NOTE: If you can find a plausible way to bring Will Bailey and other characters that weren't introduced until later seasons, more power to you! They ARE welcome!))

[ mood | thoughtful ]

This question came up in another West Wing community I am in so I thought it would be cool to get ya'lls opinions.

If possible, whose White House job would you like to have and why?

I would probably have to pick Josh's. The Deputy Chief of staff handles everything on a political aspect and well, I love everything politics. I would love trying to get bills passed and giving POTUS advice on well, everything. The DCOS is also in on pretty much all of the high security stuff and that would just be amazing.
